( London, 12nd August 2020 ) Debenhams, a large British department store, said on Tuesday (11th) that the company has laid off 2,500 employees under the pressure of the epidemic.
The company said in a statement: "Many retailers are currently making such difficult decisions, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to provide Debenhams with all opportunities to create a viable future."
After reaching a deal with creditors, Debenhams was saved from bankruptcy in April. Due to the surge in online shopping, the company had faced difficulties in survival long before the epidemic.
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the United Kingdom, since March, when the United Kingdom entered the lockdown period, a total of 730,000 jobs were fired. Although the government guaranteed employment by subsidizing wages during the epidemic, British companies, from major retailers to airlines, are still laying off thousands of jobs.
