( Tokyo, 15th June 2020 ) Japanese media reported that Honda will streamline sedan models sold in Japan, and will discontinue production of two flagship models, the Civic sedan, in summer 2020. After the sale will also stop.
The Civic and small cars GRACE will be discontinued in August and July, respectively. Both models are currently produced at Honda's factory in Yorii-machi, Saitama Prefecture. After the suspension of production, the sales of the domestic sales stores in Japan will also be stopped after the digestion is completed.
The "Civic Hatchback" and sports car "Civic Type R" imported from the British factory will continue to be sold in Japan.
As of the fiscal year of March of this year, the sales of Civic cars in the Japanese market were only 1,619, and the sales of GRACE were 5,626. In comparison, the annual sales of new cars for the third consecutive year of N-BOX are about 250,000. The VEZEL (known as the HR-V in Malaysia), a popular sports recreational vehicle (SUV), also has nearly 50,000 annual sales. Compared with these models, sales of sedans have stalled.
Regarding the reasons for discontinuing production and sales of these two models, Honda said: "This is based on the needs of the Japanese domestic car market and future trends."
The company said that the Civic sedan and GRACE will continue to be produced and sold in markets that are still popular outside of Japan such as North America and China.
