Global Aviation Industry Cuts 400,000 Jobs

( New York, 24th July 2020 ) According to Bloomberg calculations, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 400,000 employees in the aviation industry have lost their jobs, are on standby or have been told they may be unemployed.

As the epidemic has led to a sharp decline in ticket sales, companies are short of cash, and the aviation industry has suffered the most. Due to border restrictions and people's loss of interest in travel (especially international travel) due to fear of infection and prolonged quarantine, airlines around the world have drastically cut flights. Airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Qantas announced plans for dismissal and unpaid leave for thousands of people.

After the ban on layoffs (a condition of US$50 billion or RM215 billion in aid provided by the government) is lifted at the end of September, more layoffs are expected in the United States. Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and American Airlines have issued warnings about job risks to approximately 35,000 employees. The total personnel losses of the three companies may exceed 100,000 by the end of the year. Even the pilots and crew members who can keep their jobs face pay cuts overall.

400,000 is the total number of jobs lost by airlines around the world, covering pilots and crew members who are on the front line of fighting the epidemic at work, including the number of planned layoffs in the U.S. aviation industry based on company announcements, Bloomberg News reports and other media reports. .

According to the International Air Transport Association, the number of lost jobs in related industries such as aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, airports and travel agencies may reach 25 million. For every job loss in the aviation industry, the hotel industry in the United States will lose 7.5 jobs. Airbus and Boeing will cut more than 30,000 jobs.
