COVID-19: The Outbreak Hit Tourism Industry, Many Hotels Sold in Thailand

( Bangkok, 7th July 2020 ) In order to prevent and control the new pneumonia epidemic, the Thai government has implemented a national blockade to prohibit travel. Tourists in the past bustling tourist destinations are hard to see. The hoteliers who lost their income could not maintain their operations and sold and transferred hotels one after another.

Comprehensive media reported that in the island of Phuket, where tourism is the mainstay, more than 50 hotels have recently been sold or transferred through real estate agents in the Patong Beach area alone. Some hoteliers said that due to the epidemic situation and the closure of the city in recent months, the hotel has no tourists to stay in, making it unsustainable.

It is reported that there are about 120,000 rooms in more than 3,000 hotels in Phuket. In response to the epidemic situation, after the implementation of the "sea island" measure in Thailand in late March, Phuket, which used to be a tourist all over the country, appeared deserted and the travel industry was in trouble.

The situation in another resort, Koh Samui, is basically similar. The hotel on the island was forced to suspend business due to the closure of the island, which cut off revenue. At present, the operators of nearly 100 hotels have been listed to sell hotels. In the capital Bangkok and the neighboring city of Pattaya, many hotels are overwhelmed by the lack of income for a long time.

Thailand's tourism department said that the total number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand in the first four months of this year was approximately 6.7 million, a 52% year-on-year decrease. Due to the implementation of the Emergency Law and the ban on entry of foreign flights, the number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand in April was zero. Thailand’s state of emergency law and “no-fly order” have been extended to the end of June.

Universal Studios Reopens

On the other side, the U.S. epidemic has slowed, and Universal Studios Orlando, which closed in mid-March, has taken the lead in reopening it on Wednesday. During this period, visitors must wear masks and observe various epidemic prevention measures. In addition, the California authorities announced that the television, film and music industries will resume production with the approval of the authorities from next Friday.

In addition, according to the US "Washington Post" report, the US unemployment rate data released by the US Labor Department on the 5th, due to the "error", the actual unemployment rate is higher than the previously widely recognized 13.3%. If the error caused by this "misclassification" does not occur, the overall unemployment rate may increase by 3 percentage points to about 16.3%.
