( Arab, 2nd August 2020 ) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced today that the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the country has officially started operation. This is not only the first nuclear power plant in the UAE, but also the first in the Arab world.
Hamad Alkaabi, a representative of the United Arab Emirates of the International Atomic Energy Agency, tweeted: “The first nuclear reactor at the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reached its initial criticality. Started successfully."
Alkabi wrote, "This is a historic milestone for providing a new vision of clean energy for our country," and the post also included a photo of a technician celebrating.
Agence France-Presse reported that after the UAE authorities granted permission for the first reactor of the four reactors at the Baraka nuclear power plant, UAE began to put fuel rods into the reactor in February this year, with a view to moving towards business in the future.
With a population of about 10 million people, UAE is rich in oil and natural gas, but the domestic demand for electricity is huge. The Baraka nuclear power plant on the coast of the Persian Gulf was originally expected to start supplying electricity in 2017, but officials claimed that it had been delayed several times due to factors such as safety and management regulations.
